FWIW, I can confirm this bug on Xubuntu on Karmic. (never saw it before I upgraded from Hardy). For me, it's after a suspend / resume cycle. I just kill the process and get on with life. I guess I'll go the remove option since I don't use the keyboard volume control anyway
