I was having a problem just like this.  All day since installing 9.04,
whenever I tried to transfer large amounts of data from a local SMB
share, or tried to download a large file (or even do a speed test) my
wireless connection would stall... then maybe come back or maybe drop
out completely and require a reboot.

I googled and found this thread, and also ones specifically related to
my AR928X wireless hardware in Ubuntu, and found a solution that worked
for me (although apparently not some other people).

I installed wicd to replace the default network-manager.  It was
available through the regular Ubuntu Software Center and rebooted, and
the problem went away.  It's a really simple thing to try.  Not sure if
it's related to your issues.
