I was having a problem just like this. All day since installing 9.04, whenever I tried to transfer large amounts of data from a local SMB share, or tried to download a large file (or even do a speed test) my wireless connection would stall... then maybe come back or maybe drop out completely and require a reboot.
I googled and found this thread, and also ones specifically related to my AR928X wireless hardware in Ubuntu, and found a solution that worked for me (although apparently not some other people). I installed wicd to replace the default network-manager. It was available through the regular Ubuntu Software Center and rebooted, and the problem went away. It's a really simple thing to try.
