Understood. The problem with this report was (iirc) that it was sort of old and had a lot of different things mixed. If you could just open a new bug with "ubuntu-bug linux", then say in the description that the same (preferably Karmic) kernel sources with just different configs show the problem or not. Attach the config you used and subscribe me to that bug. That would give a clean start. Also with that kind of problems, it helps a lot to have a detailed description of the physical layout of the drives on the ata controller. How many drives on which port/controller. Are they specially jumpered, how? We had one case where a cdrom was jumpered slave, being the only drive on one controller and the problem was solved just by setting it to master.
