* if you don't have the /home/gerard/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf file, it means you never edited the preferences, which is ok. It's better if you don't edit those because there is an issue that enables throttling even if the user never explicitly enabled it. * To close the applet, right click on the cloud on the systray and then click on "Quit". To re open, Applications -> Internet -> Ubuntu One is correct. * To connect to IRC you can use a desktop application, like Pidgin (this is a how to I found on the web http://www.zantherus.com/community/topic/2635-howto-connect-to-irc-with- pidgin/) or you can use a Web IRC client, like this one http://www.mibbit.com/ Anyways, the issue you're experimenting is related to authentication, and this bug report has been already assigned to the proper manager (and I also notify him by IRC :-)).
