I think I know what the issue was. It's basically not a hardware problem
but a usability one.

For some reason the sound volume I want doesn't save. So I have to
regularly turn on the sound. In the menu on the sidebar I accidentally
deleted the volume control. I could not find the default one in the
menu, so I added another one that not only loads slowly (a pain), but
also makes it easy to turn up the volume too high. The result is a bad
sound. If I turn it up there to the recommended high, or a bit lower,
the sound is fine.

So I guess this is NOT anything to do with rhythmbox, just with how ill
adapted ubuntu is to ordinary people. And I'm really quite good with
computers compared to your average newbie.

I mean - even this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems is
really hard to read for anyone who is used to a windows platform.
