After reading Joshua's comment, I checked the preferences. The bandwidth
check-box was clear. So I checked it and took the values that were
offered without any change. And manually connected the applet. It
connected and stayed connected. I neither deleted the config line nor
restarted the applet. It still worked.
When I checked the preferences again, the bandwidth check -box is still
cleared!!!
I don't know what made it work but it did work!
