I can confirm the same problem with my machine running 9.10 Karmic Koala
from a fresh install. The microphone worked in version 9.04.

When I boot the computer up from the LiveCD the analog (non-usb)
microphone works, and when I boot from the hard drive it does not work.

My volume settings were identical under my "Sound Preferences" when
comparing the LiveCD and O/S booted from the hard drive.

I even tried installing the following packages (below) after some users
reported that this would work.

linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-15-generic <= didn't work
linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic <= didn't work
pulseaudio paman pavumeter<= didn't work

I'll try to get some debugs once I get in front of it at the end of this
week hopefully
