Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Ubuntu 9.10 when copy/pasting files it can sometimes happen that the files
disappear after being pasted to their new location, you then have to close
Nautilus, go to the System Monitor, select Nautilus then click End Process and
finally reopen Nautilus then go to the folder you were at for the files to
appear. It has happened on every computer of mine that has Ubuntu 9.10
installed including my desktop which has had 9.10 reinstalled and the problem
happened both times.
I don't know much else detail to include since I don't know what exactly causes
this, it happens at random times. This started with a thread here
