Hi, I was not able to reproduce this problem. From what version of python-smartpm where you upgrading exactly?
Note that there are two versions of python-smartpm now in intrepid, the one in the stock released and the one in intrepid-updates (1.1.1~bzr20081010-0ubuntu0.8.10.1 and 1.1.1~bzr20081010-0ubuntu1.8.10.0 respectively), I tried to upgrade both of them against python-smartpm 1.2-0ubuntu1.9.04.1 from karmic, and everything was ok.
