This problem is a widespread one. Absolutely everyone using VirtualBox 3.x.x with WinXP guest and PA on host audio backend cannot use voice input. This renders all VOIP apps useless... which is the prime reason for many of us to switch to VB. ... And of course there are other things too like Rosetta Stone... The problem could be because of PA or VB or both because I've seen that tweaking pulseaudio settings (especially setting the infamous tsched=0 and altering fragment size by trial and error improves the situation in the sense that less samples get dropped). This bug could be used to diagnose where the problem actually lies and then it can be sent upstream. I'd be happy to provide any logs or run tests.
