If this can help, I think I nailed down the fan issuse with the
therm_adt746x module missing its configuration files: I had a look at a
Debiian squeeze that handles the therm_adt746x fan control using a bunch
of files in /sys/devices/temperatures/. I couldn't find any similar
configuration files in my karmic setup. I'm under the impression that
power management in Ubuntu karmic is under control of lm-sensors, which
relays on the i2c module that on turn is incapable of handling the
sensors of the PB. Apparently the therm_adt746x module does read the
temperature info from the sensors (the computertemp, a gnome applet that
uses the therm_adt746x module to display the CUP and GPU temperature
gives the correct readings), but loading without the correct setup
always runs the fan full speed.
