Since there were no updates available I had to manually set driver "vesa" in 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.
The "Try to restore X"-utility of ubuntu didn't work - even starting with a 
plain new config for my hardware didn't yield to a working X session.

Do you need any more files to track this regression properly?
