I did have problems installing Ubuntu Studio (bad DVD), and used "Advanced 
Mode" during installation.
Maybe this bug is related to locale.
I am using en_US.UTF-8
I think I should be using en_US.ISO8859-1.
Trying to change that now.

added an example file which will create folder "test" plus three
subfolders in users home directory,
