This is for Ubuntu 6.10 using Gnome desktop.

I found the inaccurate documentation in the menu bar located at "System
/ Help / System Documentation". Then in the home page of Ubuntu Help
Center where it says "Welcome to the Ubuntu Help Centre" I clicked on
"Working with your desktop". On the left side where it shows categories
to click on, I chose "Advanced Desktop Configuration" which opened up
sub categories. I then chose the sub categorie of "Hide Recent
Documents in the Places menu".

Working with your desktop / Advanced Desktop Configuration / Hide Recent
Documents in the Places menu

This is what is displayed:

Hide Recent Documents in the Places menu

To hide Recent Documents from the Places menu, open a terminal and run
the command:

chmod 400 ~/.recently-used

To show the menu again, run the command:

chmod 600 ~/.recently-used

--
Using chmod 400 ~/.recently-used does not work for the .xbel file
