The reason I was running safe graphics mode is none of the Ubuntu releases correctly identify the 17" LCD monitor in normal boot. They correctly pick up the i810 driver for the Intel motherboard video adapter, but then have the Hanns.G HC174 as a Elographics touch screen, max resolution 1024x768. Way off.
Right now I'm entering this note from the same hardware running PCLinuxOS which has no trouble selecting the right driver, i810, and detecting the monitor correctly at 1280x1024x24. Presuming PCLinuxOS is open source, can't the Ubuntu developers see how to detect the video driver and 17" LCD monitor from their code? The more things that run right on Ubuntu the more widespread it will be.....my opinion. Frankly, right now, booting 20070225 the screen switches off no signal just after the splash screen comes up before loading the normal desktop. Push Enter and it comes up. I presume this is an Alpha bug.
