BTW, I didn't need to downgrade sympa, I just put "exit 0" at the beginning of /var/lib/dpkg/info/sympa.postinst, the re-ran "dpkg --configure -a", then starting Sympa caused it to complain the DB hadn't been properly updated, and asked me to run /usr/lib/sympa/bin/sympa.pl with some (provided in the message) upgrade switch. Doing it allowed Sympa to finish its upgrade properly and the new version then runs OK.
