In the latest alsa driver snapshot the option to switch between internal and front mic disappears from alsamixer. With alsa 1.0.20 that comes with 2.6.31, switch is there, but mic gives lots of static noise and hardly anything else. The issue is quite frustrating as everything works fine with WinXP on same hardware, tested with WinXP + Skype and it works perfectly. In linux the mic is the last and only problem with the Acer 1410, otherwise its a really great 64bit Ubuntu portable.
