I have the same problem with Dell D630 and a Transcend 320GB USB drive. I tried both mint Helena, Ubuntu Karmic with same results and symptoms(usplash message, "Checking battery status.." in dmesg, no errors in Xorg.0.log)
I have tried upgrading video drivers(nvidia) to version 185 and then downgrading to version 173. Also tried dist-upgrade and then rebuilding initramfs.
