OK, so with the custom kernel I had other issues like dropped wifi connections and no brightness control. Next, I compiled the new 2.6.32 kernel, and suspend still does not work with that, so I said F it and went back to Jaunty, and now everything works. So, the bug fix is: Reinstall Jaunty.
