Easy fix. Install the linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic package through synaptic and then install the Alsa sound package and needed dependancies. thats all i did.. once the modules are loaded open the alsa mixer GUI and set both internal and front mic sliders to 100%. you should be good to go.. i did it last night on my Hp-Mini 110 and it's working flawlessly
