I believe this is ultimately a documentation bug and a dependency bug.

The importance of lvm2 does not appear to me to be well documented; I
also missed this - until, of course, the next time I tried to boot.

Also, I think the dependency model of Ubuntu is lacking in a manner that
shows here: my system configuration (specifically, /etc/fstab and my
partition table) has a dependency on lvm2.  It's not a dependency on a
particular package.  But aptitude, synaptic, and other such tools view
dependencies as entirely things between packages.
