Sorry, seems I was too fast. Today KPackageKit died when it should do
two minor upgrades. I did an apt-get update/upgrade right after I
received the notification in KDE, before starting KPackageKit itself.
Apt said:

...
The following packages will be upgraded:
  linux-libc-dev upstart
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 1,254kB of archives.
After this operation, 4,096B of additional disk space will be used.
...

I aborted and went to upgrade with KPackageKit, which died right after
"Getting Dependencies". Syslog shows one line about that:

Dec 11 09:32:01 mc2 PackageKit: WARNING: Recursive dependencies are not
implemented
