I changed the file system from reiserfs as suggested in some answers/bug reports around (e.g.: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/445199 ). First I tried ext2, which did not work. Then I used the "use whole disk" option, where ext4 is used but the installer chrashed again. ( I would really love to have karmik koala on that machine :-( )
