I experience the same problem on my system since Hardy. Jaunty had it
and a completely fresh install of Karmic shows the freeze as well. I
have replaced the DVD-drive and all cabling as well as updated the
mainboard's BIOS - no success. Furthermore I never had problems when
booting from a CD or installing from it (but I also did not try to let
it run for a longer time after a CD-Boot like it is suggested in bug
483070)

If i input a DVD or CD - the system completely freezes after about half
a minute. It also happens when I disable hald-device-polling so also
think it is not hal-related.

I have not found any logs of the crash, it seems that the Kernel does
not have time to write any before it locks up!
