I'm using Karmic and this problem has recently started. It hasn't been an issue for me before (I started on Intrepid) but now it is a problem. Same as description, switches to US layout from UK. Even if I change it back to UK it's fine until I reboot then back to US. At least it's the same language but @ key is in a different place and I can't find a pound sign.
