This bug still exists in Ubuntu Karmic using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23 (20090817).
Incoming mail event generates static from all wave files - and the default system sound too when that is selected as the notifier. These same files play properly in all other applications. Strangely, Thunderbird played WAV files OK for a short time after it was installed. Could a major or minor 'upgrade' of Ubuntu have produced an unintended effect?
