Just an update regarding the new kernel update: I saw the new version (2.31.17) in the last group of updates in Updates Manager, so I followed the instructions you suggested to grab the backtrace, but after reboot... nothing! There were just NO crashes, neither in compiz, nor anything else. I'm sorry! :( I'll try too do the backtrace procedure every time I see a kernel update, and will tell you if I obtain something!
