Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

Running 'alsactl names' hangs my Dapper desktop machine immediately, and I have
to perform a hardware reset.
Can't use keyboard or mouse in X or CLI, or switch VCs, i.e. a complete hang.

Runnning 'alsactl -d names' produces this output before hanging (retyped from
handwritten notes, so may have typos):
ALSA lib pcm.c:1972: (snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM phoneline:0
definition (id:phoneline, value:cards.pcm.phoneline)
ALSA lib pcm.c:1972: (snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM phoneline:0
definition (id:phoneline, value:cards.pcm.phoneline)
ALSA lib pcm.c:1972: (snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM modem:0
definition (id:modem, value:cards.pcm.modem)
ALSA lib pcm.c:1972: (snd_pcm_open_conf) Invalid type for PCM modem:0
definition (id:modem, value:cards.pcm.modem)

This should have a pretty standard dapper install, packages up-to-date as of
today.
Non-standard packages: libdvdcss2, w32codecs, libfame0, libgcrypt11
Kernel 2.6.15-28-686

Possibly related but non-fatal, running gmplayer without the '-really-quiet'
option produces errors:
"alsa-control: unable to find simple control 'PCM',0% ??% ??,?% 0 0 42%"
and also the volume-control applet doesn't work (a gstreamer issue I haven't
solved), so I use alsamixergui for adjusting volume.
