I have repeated your steps.
And you are right, this is what occurs.
Splash-screen thingie is a dependency of gnome-art .. but it removes
both unless you mark it as well.
So a temporary work around would be to select the splash-screen-selector
as well.
This bug however is very valid. It should report you that it splash-
screen-selector should be selected as well.
I'll also link this but to the appropiate package..
