James, As we're working with the latest devel version, why not use 0.15.2 to start with? I can't reproduce the issue with 0.15.2. Also, I'm developing on Karmic with python2.6, so it should work.
0.15.2 also fixes a number of other important bugs, such as one with unicode characters that garnered a fair number of reports.
