Hi there, it happened very often to me until I disabled splash boot screen to see what shutdown logs where saying.
To try this fix edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and there you will find rows like this: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet splash locale=it_IT Change this line to looks like: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro locale=it_IT You have to remove 'quiet' and 'splash' words.
