This is by design.  Starting in Jaunty, python2.4 is not a supported
version for module building and other general python uses.  The
interpreter was left in for the sole purpose of supporting a few
packages (e.g. zope) that had not migrated to 2.5.  It should not be
used as a general purpose python interpreter.  FYI, the status of
python2.5 in lucid will be similar (if it is not removed before
release).
