Sorry for the joke in previous comment ;) I remembered something, but I'm not completely sure... I think I compiled/installed mplayer in edgy (the release candidate version, which can be (or not) feisty's one) and had the same problem. Just noise in almost all movies.
So maybe it's an upstream problem... or a compatibility issue with actual codecs, I don't know.
