this actually *started* happening to me in Karmic
i'm not sure about AC power, but the timeout for hard drive spindown
should definitely be increased to something sensible (a minute, at
least)
attached is hdparm output. interesting part seems to be this:
Standby timer values: spec'd by Standard, with device specific minimum
** Attachment added: "hdparm.output"
