I'm using ubuntu 9.04 server and I have the same problem I installed xvn4server and I'm not in able to see the gnome desktop from remote computer, I only see the gray screen with a big X for the mouse pointer (the classic X screen) If I start Xvnc without specify the vnc password's file the remote connection is refused and I could launch it whit this command line
