Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gphpedit

This does not look like bug #189733 so I open a new one.

Browsing a remote windows share is no problem, but trying to open a file fails
with
 "The file smb://...../file.php" was not found.
Would you like to create it as an empty document?"

I get some shell output too:
$ gphpedit

(gphpedit:22236): Gtk-WARNING **: Operation not supported by backend
