A guess: what happens if you press Ctrl+Alt+F7 up to and including
Ctrl+Alt+F12? Does that bring you to the graphical environment? If
that's the case it's most likely a bug in the X.org server.
We also need some more information before we can process this bug. What
graphics card, motherboard, network card and hard disk do you have?
If possible, could you provide us with the files /var/log/Xorg.log.0,
/var/log/kern.log and /var/log/syslog of the affected system after you've
booted in the blinking underscore again?
