I can suggest a possible fix for this problem. See comment #30 of
Poppler upstream bug #18711:

I patched Poppler to follow the suggestion there and at least I cannot
see a regression: My HP printers still print and Ghostscript displays
the files correctly on the screen.

A debdiff for Lucid's Poppler is attached. Please upload the new Poppler
package (we can remove the ptach later if it shows regressions).

To the reporters of the bug: Please try as soon as the new Poppler gets
available (use a Lucid live CD) and report whether it fixes your
problems.
