I'm having a similar problem. Only gparted is able to load the partition table 
of my raid device. I was however, able to install through ubiquity.. After 
that, any attempt to boot the machine fails.
The raid device itself appears in /dev/mapper, as well as 'control'; but none 
of the partitions are listed unless I reboot with the live cd and open gparted.

Perhaps I could boot the system if I knew why it is that gparted can
read the table...
