this is NOT a Karmic only problem:
as an experiment I downloaded various other distros (live cd's, latest release) 
& found identical, or worse, problems with the following...

KUBUNTU 9.10
openSUSE 11.2 [KDE]
openSUSE 11.2 [Gnome}
Fedora 12

Mandriva 1 2010 had no problem with USB wireless adaptor [but didn't
like the USB mobile broadband 'dongle'].

Hope that elps & proves tat this is not a Ubuntu only prob [but may be a
kernel prob?]
