I have the same issue. I did a trace on the mono process running gnome-
do and found out that it hangs while trying to read battery info even
though I don't have the battery widget thingie enabled...

I was able to reproduce it 100% by following these steps:
- start gnome-do with docky and without the battery widget
- start to trace the process in some terminal window
- set up icon zoom to 140% of original size
- have around 10 items in docky total
- very fast hover the mouse from the very left to the very right item back and 
forth

Results:
- within 5 seconds dockys icon zoom freezes for several seconds
- trace shows reading battery info...
- after a few seconds normal operation continues

This also happens if you don't try to trigger it of course, just a lot
less often than it does when you do this trick.
