Hi , I can confirm that the problem still manifested itself following a recent (about 3 weeks ago, AFAIR) upgrade attempt on the laptop ... I had to resort to booting karmic into 2.6.28.11 (which probably caused the bug I reported at the time) in order to re-install jaunty.
