I just checked with ubuntu lucid-desktop-amd64 20091221 (booting the iso from hd via grub2 loopback) on the acer extensa 5635z. The display with kernel mode setting was fine. I also tried to switch off kernel mode setting with the "nomodeset" parameter. That also works.
@David Perfors I notice that the newest kernel for lucid is 2.6.32-9.13.
