I am currently having this problem with Thunderbird version 2.0.0.23
(20090817) having just upgraded to Kubuntu Karmic Koala.

Every time Thunderbird opens, it appears to be attempting to display the
start screen, and this is being sent to Firefox. I have registered
Firefox as the default URL handler under KDE, since if I don't do that,
URLs on my desktop open in Konqueror.

I have tried disabling the start screen in Thunderbird (I have unchecked
the "When Thunderbird starts, show the start page in the message area"
but to no avail). If I have this enabled, Thunderbird has *two* panes,
one unresolved URL with the un-expanded property names in it -
http://%locale%.www.mozilla.com/%LOCALE%/%APP%/%VERSION%/start/ - and
one with expanded property names - http://en-gb.www.mozillamessaging.com
/en-GB/thunderbird/2.0.0.23/start/.

If you revert to the default KDE setting for opening URLs, it seems to
make no difference.

If I find any more information, I will post it here.
