So aside from the box that used to be my file server now being officially dead, I just went ahead and did a clean install of kubuntu 9.10 on the same box, more or less, that I originally reported this on. >From what I can tell, I have working sound, including surround, and other applications are able to access the sound card. I haven't dug into the new architecture much. I know there was phonon, etc., all being discussed, so it may be software mixing, but I don't really care as long as it works. Most interestingly, I have no asound.conf whatsoever.
