Hello,
How did you come to have grub1 installed, given that you installed
Ubuntu 9.10? Did you select some package that depends on grub, forcing
removal of grub-pc (grub2)? (This is the usual cause for this error,
but your dpkg upgrade log is incomplete and doesn't show this
happening.)
You should be able to fix this problem by reinstalling the grub-pc
package (sudo apt-get install grub-pc).
