I am unlucky to have an Intel chipset and Karmic has been an expected
disappointment with this particular notebook. On the other hand this bug
has been a tremendous step forward. I have now a notebook intel 855GM
graphics chipset and pentium M processor running a stable Karmic (thanks
to misc. Google searches, trials and errors).

I haven't reverted to the driver 2.4 (see #2), but modified the Grub2
boot option to "nolapic", deactivated "KMS" and reverted to the "versa"
driver. I will update the thread (370292) when I have little time, and
after a good day sleep (took me a full night).
