This problem also appears in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala using HPLIP Software Version 3.9.12 with the following printers and drivers:
HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript (recommended) HP Color LaserJet CP4005 Postscript (recommended) Seems to be a general HPLIP bug on Karmic. Additionally, some "Print Settings" on the graphical HPLIP Device Manager are disabled or cannot be changed.
