Hi,
I did had the same problem with a correct detection of the usb-stick but
without loading any filesystem driver on Ubuntu 9.10 Kernel 2.6.31-16.
Following line of the bug description solved this problem:

echo "usb_storage" | sudo tee -a /etc/modules

But now I do have an unpleasured sound issue if no usb storage device is
connected.
This sound (about or over 1 kHz) is generated with permanetly short accesses to
my SSD drive.
I do believe this accesses are comming from kernel module installs retrys (in
this case usb_storage).

Is there any possibility to reduce the retry frequency to 0.1 s or so?

Best Regards
Alexander
