I had exactly the same problem.

I couldn't find documentation saying where os-prober and linux-boot-
prober got their uuid.

The instructions in message #3 (thanks Felix) permitted to manually
correct grub.cfg on my copy-disk. Then, on  the original disk, i ran
update-grub, which gives now the right uuid for the copy-disk.

Would it be possible to get uuid directly from device instead of
questioning the alternate disk grub.cfg file, for example with:

sudo grub-probe -d /dev/sdXY --target=fs_uuid

which gives the right uuid.
